Message 3rd brakelight would be against DOT regs. Could you get a ticket for it if you were pulled over? Maybe. It depends on the officer and if he's wanting to put the screws to that person. Likewise for those states that require annual safety inspections, it's up to the inspection shop to be vigilant and notice the non-conformance. Here in MA, I've been failed for no front plate (not my Z but one of my other cars) but regularly see cars with bigger safety violations sporting valid inspection stickers. It all depends on the shop you take it to. If I had a wing with no third brake light, I'd bet one in five shops would pick up on it. Seats could be a much less noticeable item....

In areas where they are pulling people over for the sake of catching non-street-legal mods, I could see aftermarket seats (or non-OEM seats) being a potential ticket. All that needs to happen is for the officer to question it to the point that he feels compelled to write it up as a ticket. Then it's up to the ticket recipient to prove the street legality of the part(s) in question at the hearing.

I'm not trying to make an extreme example out of this, except for the safety aspect. We've all seen pictures of wrecked Z's and testimonials from the owners as to how well they fared the accident. Seats (and seatbelts) play a role in that. I'd hate to hear that someone died in an accident where the non-OEM seat (aftermarket or from another car) contributed to the death because it wasn't installed properly, or something failed because it wasn't designed to work as it was applied to the Z. I'm not saying that the factory Z seats have some magical design that makes them safer than others. But keep in mind that seat design is part of a bigger picture. The seat, along with the seat belts went through crash testing to ensure that the car could pass FMVSS requirements and be certified for sale in the US.

In case you wonder why I'm making such a big deal out of this...I used to work for a seatbelt/airbag company and know what the automakers have to go through to pass these requirements.

All I'm trying to do is pass along a word of caution that a little more thought is required beyond figuring out how to make the bolt holes line up for the new seat.
